yoin LABS

the resonance that remains when the sound has stopped

A studio of one: Alberto Valverde, software engineer with a master's in applied Artificial Intelligence. I design, build and ship every app end to end. One is on the App Store; two are still in the workshop.

The name

余韻

余韻yo — in

In Japanese, 余韻 is the resonance that lingers after a sound has faded. The echo of a bell nobody is ringing any more.

That is exactly what I want from an app: something left over after you close it. A feeling, a habit, an idea still sounding quietly.

The background of this page is a real wave simulation: every move you make drops a ripple that spreads, collides with the others and dies away. And the colour runs from the deepest indigo to paper as you scroll.

The problem

Focus apps punish you. Break the timer and you lose the streak, kill the tree, fail the session. Guilt is a terrible engine — it works for a week, then the app gets deleted.

The approach

Flip the reward. Focused time is currency, and that currency builds a city that is permanently yours. Nothing is ever destroyed, so coming back after a bad week feels like returning to something you own, not something you ruined.

The result

Sessions people finish and — the number that actually matters — people still opening it in month three.

  • 01Focus compoundsMinutes become materials; materials become a skyline you keep.

What it is

Most habit trackers treat a missed day as failure. Ember treats it as weather: a habit you can keep warm at low effort and bring back up, instead of a streak you shatter.

What it is

Everyone saves things. Almost nobody returns to them. Atlas is an attempt at the returning part — the shape is still moving, which is exactly the interesting stage.

Method

Idea to App Store

Four steps, always the same.

01

Find the itch

Start from a problem I actually have. If I wouldn't open it daily, it doesn't get built.

02

Draw it first

Every screen in Figma before a line of code, including the empty and error states nobody plans for.

03

Build in the open

Ship to TestFlight early, watch real people use it, cut whatever they never touch.

04

Launch and keep going

Store page, screenshots, icon, updates. Launch day is the start of the work, not the end.

Studio

The person behind it

Alberto Valverde · Quito

I make apps alone, on purpose. No team, no handoffs, no telephone game between design and code.

That means I sketch the idea, design every screen, write the Swift, draw the icon, shoot the screenshots and press submit. Slower on paper, faster in practice — the decisions that usually die in a handoff just get made.

It also means the details nobody asks for get done anyway: the animation curve, the empty state, the haptic that lands exactly on the beat. Those details are the product.

By day I work at Mondo Tracking (Miami): operations, technology and support for fleets — ELD, GPS, dashcams and the automations that hold it together. By night, yoin labs. Software engineer (UDLA) with a master's in applied Artificial Intelligence.
